School and Communication
YES! I have to admit I am officially "one of those moms!" I had a feeling this would happen. I was concerned because I had not received any communication from Landon's teachers or therapist at school. I just could not believe that after 4 weeks in school there was no progress update or a note letting me know what was going on in class. I had written to the teacher twice and received his photo collage after the first note and this time I had received a brief note that he was adjusting. Of course I was disappointed, I wanted to know more. I have a son who is not as verbal as other 3 year olds and could not express to me what he was doing in school. I ask Landon everyday when I pick him up "How was school buddy!? Did you have fun!?" I know that my question will not be answered but I will NEVER stop asking him. After a few phone calls I decided I would be an advocate for my son and write a professional email to his teacher and therapist. I was requesting to establish a communication system that would allow me to know what areas I could help my son at home and what things he was learning in school so I could use them as prompts to encourage language in the home. Later in the afternoon I received a personal phone call from Landon's teacher and we had a great conversation. She was grateful to hear what caring and willing parents Landon had and she would do her best to communicate with me every day through a Daily sheet that explains what happened at school. We discussed some of the goals we both had and agreed to stay in contact.
Today in Landon's backpack was his first Daily Communication sheet that explained in small detail what happened at school today. What center's he participated in and what story they read at circle time. I also received a post-it-note letting me know that Landon has a friend named Leila at school who he shouted out her name when she walked in the classroom today! The teacher prompted him to say "Hi Leila!" in which he attempted to do!
Today's communication note made me smile and also helped me talk to my son about his school day!! I am grateful and lucky that we now have a great parent-teacher communication system in place!!
