As we all
know Landon has acquired a new fear of ALL sports games, especially his beloved
Hawks. He will enter the United Center but he will NOT sit and watch the game.
The actual arena area is a huge anxiety for him. We have talked to Landon's ABA
therapist about some suggestions on how to help him overcome this anxiety and
she offered that we try taking Landon to a local hockey rink so he can see the
positive in the experience. One evening before dinner Ben and I took Landon to
the hockey rink right by our house. Luckily there were a few hockey games going
on. As soon as we entered the rink Landon started saying "NO! NO!"
but we kept him in and made him look and watch. He started to slowly relax and
enjoy the boys playing hockey. He also noticed two younger boys playing hockey
with a bouncy ball and mini-sticks so he made a b-line for them! We decided to
take him into the store to see if we could find an inexpensive stick for him to
play with. With luck we did and before we knew it Landon was back in the rink
running and playing with the little boy! He has really started to enjoy playing
and imitating other children (this is great!!!).

Hockey with Dada with his NEW Hockey Stick in hand!
A
good friend of mine had mentioned to me that the Chicago Blackhawks have open
practices to the public and I should take Landon over there to see them. Landon
was on Spring Break this week from school so he and I did just that. We left
Quinn with Nana and off to Johnny's Ice House mama and Landon went. The entire
way there I talked about how we were going to see the Hawks! Never once did he
say "NO!" As we entered the arena he started to get a little fearful,
turn his head and shout "NO!" but I kept him calm, took him right up
to the glass and showed him THE HAWKS! I think mama was in more star struck then
Landon. We were right on the glass watching the HAWKS practice. I would point
as they skated by and Landon was so excited he started shouting out names;
"HOSSA!, KANER!, SEABS!, SHARPE!!" I have a small glimmer of hope for
his next Hawks game. This may have just worked!!
SHARPE!
Enjoying the HAWKS!
